DEAREST PEAKS OF BAKER, WASHINGTON
Before dawn, clock-radio sounding,
I wake to feel my pink heart pounding.
Today’s the day, I told my socks,
I’d find a mountain that truly rocks.
Nosh some oats, brand name Quaker,
And put the car in drive to Baker.
In my head, like a record broken,
I hear the words last night spoken:
"Biggest base in the U-S-A,"
Just a three-hour drive stood in the way.
My premier visit to this crest,
Boots laced up, teal-puffy vest;
I found the pow so deep and pure,
Love was found that day for sure.
Not just a crush, but admiration,
That grew ten-fold each elevation.
A monument to all that’s sick,
Sculpted sublimity for every trick.
Hundreds of feet of vertical rise,
This hometown alp was just my size.
Lift prices fair, diverse terrain,
A park and steeps for any Jane.
In ‘98, it’s no consolation,
It had the world’s most accumulation.
On groomed runs or bindings deep,
This Cascades peak was mine for keeps.
T’was our first date, that sweet November.
My heart was yours then and forever.
Too bad for me, I have to share,
With anyone with ski bus fare;
So as I wrap this true-love column,
Be there or be banked at this year’s slalom!
