Calgary's Taryn Cowling Claims SBCWOMEN.COM Best Trick at Mt. Norquay You Look Good Stop

Mar 4, 2009

Author: Christina Raymond, Photos: Richard Roth

The third stop of the Coors Light You Look Good Rider’s Cup took place last Saturday February 28, at Banff’s Mt. Norquay.  Unique to the stop was the sbcwomen.com Best Trick jump feature, as the previous two contests saw the women’s best trick take place on rails. At the end of the day, Calgary native Taryn Cowling walked away $500 wealthier thanks to her huge Backside 3 Tail off the largest jump, measuring 50 feet.  We caught up with Taryn to see what is in store for her for the remainder of the 2009 season, to get her thoughts on women’s snowboarding and more.

NAME: Taryn Cowling
AGE: 20
YEARS RIDING: 7
YEARS COMPETING: 5
SPONSORS: Billabong, Oakley, Mission Snow and Skate
HOMETOWN: Calgary
HOME MOUNTAIN: COP

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE NEW sbcwomen.com BEST TRICK PRIZE? DID IT PLAY A PART IN YOUR DECISION TO ENTER THE CONTEST?
It's great that there's an equal cash purse for both men and women best trick. It's only been close to 90 years since women started to have equal rights, like voting and what have you... so this equal cash purse was just another feminist conquest. Yes, that cushy extra played a part in my entering the contest.

WHAT OTHER CONTESTS WILL WE SEE YOU AT THIS SEASON?
World cups (blah) and other fun slopestyles like the Billabong Flaunt It and my favourite, Telus fest.

WHERE IS THE COOLEST PLACE YOU HAVE EVER BEEN SNOWBOARDING?

Italy... Nobody seems to notice the fresh snow right beside all the groomed runs? Crazy Italians.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM SNOWBOARD TRIP?

Me and my friends snowboard parachuting off steep snowy cliffs with buckets of eggs so that we can throw them at each other in mid-air. Like parachute wars or something... But we'd have a helicopter to take us to the top every time so we could go infinity times.

WHAT FEMALE RIDERS ARE YOU STOKED ON AND WHY?
Raewyn Reid, not only because she's my best friend, but she's also better than most boys I know. Oh, and she's really cute. Plus Sarka Pancochova, she's the best girl I have ever seen, in my entire life, ever. In addition to being the best snowboarder she's got wicked dance moves.

IF YOU COULD SPEND THE DAY RIDING WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Breanna Stangeland, Mindsay Leque, and Raekwon because when we ride together the magic is more powerful than David Blaine's.

SHOUT OUTS?
Mike Stastook, he's my life coach. Oh ya, and I guess Jay too.
