Hailing all the way from the Northwest Territories, Molly Milligan made the move down to B.C. to pursue snowboarding. Getting to spend her winters shredding Whistler and competing across Canada is pretty awesome. But now that summer is here, we hit her up to find out about her off-season plans and to give her a High 5ive!
On growing up in Yellowknife: 1.) Native Studies in school. I thought it was retarded at the time, since we were surrounded by the culture anyways. But the fact that I’ve learned how to smoke fish, make bannock and pick wild cranberries and tan caribou hide is pretty freaking awesome. 2.) So many opportunities for northerners that you wouldn’t be exposed to down south, work-wise, school-wise, etc. If you have the desire to succeed, you really can take advantage. 3.) The Midnight sun in the summer. It being 12:00 a.m. and bright outside is a trip. 4.) Palette parties 5.) Folk on the Rocks (the summer festival) and Caribou Carnival, held out on the ice every year with lots of bingo, bullocks fish and chips and cabane à sucre. And contest such as who can chop wood, get a fire going and boil a pot of tea the fastest.
Best things about Whistler: 1.) Million Dollar Ridge 2.) Rainbow Park 3.) Biking: the trails, bike park, cruising, whatever. So sick. 4.) The people 5.) The proximity to Vancouver Island
Summer plans: 1.) Bike Park 2.) Dust off my pencils and paint brushes and rediscover the artist in me. It’s been a long time 3.) Camp of Champions 4.) Get out of debt 5.) Not work too much *Seeing as I busted my shoulder a few days ago, numbers 1, 3 and 4 are not looking good but I will REALLY be able to work on numbers 2 and 5. Awesome.
Favourite books: 1.) Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt 2.) The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini 3.) Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly by Anthony Bourdain 4.) Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert 5.) The Queen of the Damned. The third book in the Vampire chronicles, famous for it’s first, Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice. The Twilight series doesn’t even come close to these books.
Favourite recipes: My top five list is constantly on rotation. These five are definitely in high demand over the summer months. Fresh and simple, all of these recipes are total comfort food for me. 1.) Pesto on fresh pasta is delicious. Throw in some bocconcini and cherry tomatoes too. 2.) Guacamole 3.) Pizza two ways: (a) Fresh dough: you don’t have to make it; you can usually buy it at the grocery store. My top favourite toppings right now are blue cheese and calabrese with tomato sauce and freestosh basil. (b) Or, instead of tomato sauce, substitute basil oil and layer grilled vegetables of your choice, goat cheese and drizzle with a balsamic reduction. Bake in the oven at 450 degrees for about 20 minutes. 4.) Chilly Chai: this is a yummy summer drink you can get at Moguls here in Whistler. Here’s my version: In a blender combine ¾ cup milk, ¼ cup concentrated chai tea sweetened with honey or chai syrup, and 1/2 of a frozen banana. That’s it. Love it. 5.) Granola: homemade granola is so much better than store bought. I eat this everyday with yogurt and whatever fresh fruit I have lying around.
