This year’s 6th annual Hot Dawgz and Hand Rails - aptly titled Rise of the Dog at Bear Mountain Resort went down Saturday September 19th, 2009. With more the 40 pro riders going for the $15,000 in cash prizes, free Admission for public, full bar for 21 & up, music, vendor booth city, pro autograph signings, games, and giveaways as well as the premier  of both Stepchild/Thirty Two’s new film “This Video Sucks” and Bear Mountain’s “Parkumentary” the resort was packed with thousands of snowboard followers from the Southern California area.

This year Bear’s legendary park staff took it to another level with the unique features they built for the event. Spread out in a horseshoe shape so spectators could stand in the middle to watch there was plenty of variety and difficulty in the features to ride.  Starting on one side riders dropped in to a 30 foot marble ledge that led into either a jumps to massive wallride or a long curved wall that both funneled into a wide pyramid that riders could stall out tricks on or air over. on the other side a curved kink rail to a wide long flat box with step down ledges and slope sides for a variety of moves and ways to hit it. MC’s by Snowboarders Pat Bridges and Pro Snowboarder Todd Richards the crowd was also entertained by their witty banter and Todd’s updates on the Hurley Pro of surfing.

It was a tough competition with defending champ Jed Anderson, Johnny Lazz, Zak Hale, Louie Paradise, Yale Cousino and others.  There was no female category but 4 girls showed up to battle against the guys, Melissa Evans, Gabi Viteri, Marie Hucal and Gabby Maiden.  The girls rode every feature just as hard as the guys and Gabby made it into the semi finals by locking in a 50-50 on the curved kink rail first try and Marie’s 180’s to tail press on the ledge and Alley oops on the wall got her in the semi’s too. Neither made it to the finals unfortunately. A high caliber of riding was going down as Jed easily stomped a backside 360 onto the ledge and was going for the backflip on the wall but couldn’t get the landing. Lots of guys were getting inverted on the wall ride,Ryan Pauls Misty Flip 720 was a total crowd pleaser, local rider Scott Vine went massive on a backside rodeo 7 and Johnnie Paxson, nailed a backflip backside 180 revert. Over on the kink there was lots of slams going down but some were able to navigate the kinks and curves.  Scott Vine laid a nosepress through the kink and Ted Borland took best trick with a 5-0 through the kink. The multiple fun box saw an array of spins on and spins off and of course the crowd please, front flip off. In the end it was Scott Vine that took home 1st followed closely by Jed Anderson and local Bear rider Zake Hale in 3rd.
After a full day of shredding action the crowd was stoked to get more as the screened Parkumentary and This Video Sucks.
