Snowboarders from Around the Globe Return to Calgary for World Cup
On February 28 and 29, the world’s best snowboarders from around the globe will drop into the 22 foot Halfpipe at CODA’s Canada Olympic Park for two days of TELUS Halfpipe competition presented by Sport Chek. With $50,000 in cash to pay out, thousands of spectators are expected to witness the return of the World Cup to Calgary for its second year in a row.
The Canadian National Team lands some of their best results when competing on home soil and they will be coming to Calgary after just competing at the Korea and Japan World Cups. The team is excited to come home and will be out in full force for the Calgary World Cup making up almost one third of the competitive field. There are a number of rising stars on the Canadian team such as Brad Martin of Ancaster, Ont., and Brendan Davis of Barrie, Ont., who each took home a bronze medal at the Canadian World Cups last season, as well as Crispin Lipscomb of Whistler, B.C. and team mates Sarah Conrad of Halifax, N.S. and Mercedes Nicoll of Whistler, B.C.
With an expected 75 athletes from 11 nations, teams are traveling to Calgary from Australia, China, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, the Philippines, Switzerland and the United States. International riders to watch out for include Americans Steve Fisher and Tommy Czeschin.
The newly installed C.O.P. Halfpipe lights will be burning bright on Friday, February 29 for the nighttime finals, and in addition to the World Cup action, there will be tons of animation at CODA’s Canada Olympic Park with the addition of a big screen and live event experience, the World Cup Sponsor Village, and the Coors Light Beer Garden & Outdoor BBQ.
