Supergirl “Actionista” Collection Launch
By Roberta Rodger and Stephanie Lake
I’m pretty much living the life down here in Encinitas. I’ve been surfing, going to barbecues, eating fish tacos, and hitting up the sun and sand, but I sure felt like I was in California when I was invited to be on the host committee for the Supergirl “Actionista” Collection launch party along with surfers Holly Beck, Serena Brooke, Mary Osborne, Leilani Gryde, and skateboarders Holly Lyons, Lauren Perkins and Alize Montes. I didn’t really know what to expect as I’d never been to a launch party before but it seemed like it would be fun and all the proceeds from the night benefited Boarding for Breast Cancer, a cause I’ve always been stoked to support.
The main agenda for the evening was the launch of the Warner Bros. Supergirl “Actionista” Collection. WB re-imagined the S-Shield for girls, so we have our own symbol of strength, power, and determination. I thought it was pretty cool that WB wanted to create a symbol that was just for girls, something they could look to for inspiration and style.
“Today’s young women of all types are powerful expressionists, but in action sports we see unique pursuits of passion where independence, creativity and style are critical elements of both the sports these girls engage in and the lifestyles they live,” said Karen McTier, executive vice president of worldwide marketing for Warner Bros. consumer products. “The Supergirl shield is an equally powerful expression of independence and strength—and now we’ve added a new level of style specifically for the action sports girl.”
The Supergirl collection embodies everything that action sports women hold true to hearts and maintain in their day-to-day lifestyles, while supporting a fundamental cause that is plaguing women of all ages—breast cancer. The collection features an Etnies girl limited-edition shoe, Havaianas limited-edition flip flop, Rip Curl bikini and T-shirts, Sk8grl tank tops, Surf Diva T-shirts and customs surfboards by Guy Okazaki.
Aside from the night being thrown for a good cause and to help give something to empower young girls in action sports, it was also a really good time. It was so fun to hang out with surf girls Serena Brooke and Leilani Gryde, and one of my favourite skaters, Lauren Perkins. It was great to watch young Alize Montes who, at only 8 years old, is already making a name for herself in skateboarding. She wears a skirt and can throw down Frontside 360s on a mini ramp. Alize skated the mini ramp outside most of the night and ran around with her helmet on eating all the candy in sight. The evening also included a live DJ, fashion show, and ended with a raffle for skate decks and a hand-painted surfboard.
This was the second launch of the Warner Bros. Supergirl brand, the first being the Supergirl fashionista collection held in May. Both collections will come together in September 2007 at S3 Supergirl Jam, a skate-snow-style event that will be held in San Diego.
