How I spent my summer vacation
With Spencer O'Brien
This May I booked a pretty last-minute ticket to Kauai, Hawaii for some much needed vacation time. I met up with my friend Brendan and his family who own a timeshare on a really great house right in Princeville.
We spent a lot of time at Ke'e Beach where we went snorkeling, swimming and hiking. I saw a sea turtle and was pretty pumped. Some weird guy told us to come borrow his canoe and kayak while we were snorkeling, which creeped us out a little, but he also told us about a cave off the road called the Blue Room. We decided to check it out.
It was a huge cave that receded down into a cliff with hanging vines. Some Hawaiian locals were chilling with some beers. It was kind of scary swimming in the dark but the fresh water was really nice. The actual cave itself isn't the Blue Room; you have to swim underneath a ledge that's about three feet off of the water. It's completely pitch black as you're swimming back towards the wall of the cave but when you turn around all of the light is reflected off the walls and floor and creates this amazing blue light. It was so pretty and really relaxing, one of the coolest things I've ever done.
We also hiked to a crazy waterfall that I can't remember the name of. We hiked for about three hours through the jungle and over streams. In the middle of the hike there was a great beach where you can camp, but we kept going until we got to the waterfall. It's a 200-foot, three-tier cascade. The flow was so light that you can swim underneath it and sit behind it. I'm going to say that it's probably the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I didn't want to leave. It was a last minute trip, and very well worth it. However, it did make me wonder what I'm doing in the snow all year. Just kidding.
