Roxy Sneak Peek
Roberta Rodger puts Roxy’s 2008-09 hardgoods and outerwear line to the test with the Roxy crew at The Canyons in Utah.
Lucky for me, I decided to stay a little longer in Utah after Christmas because the mountains were getting pounded by storm after storm and I also had the opportunity to attend Roxy’s Sneak Peak held at The Canyons resort. Roxy brings out retailers, media, riders from the Roxy Mountain Project (girls at resorts throughout the U.S. that ride every day and can be spokes-ladies throughout the year) and, of course, some of their top pro riders to take a look at the new fall line of outerwear and hardgoods and put them to the test by spending the day on the hill with all the ladies!
I was excited to go up The Canyons with Roxy team manager Jessica Dalpiaz, who I used to ride and compete with years ago and never get to see enough of. We met up with Roxy pro riders Erin Comstock and Amber Stackhouse and Roxy’s Stephanie Paine. The winds were starting to kick up as we headed up the gondola and it was definitely chilly riding but that didn’t deter any of the girls that were up there to snowboard and ski. I think there were probably about 40 girls total out for the event so we definitely got noticed on the hill riding in huge packs of charging female snowboarders and skiers. I had never ridden a Roxy board before and Jess brought me the Roxy Envy, the same board that Torah Bright rides when she dominates in pipe and park contests. I now know why Torah rides that board because it’s basically the sickest board I’ve ridden in a long time! The Envy comes with Magnetraction, which I have to say is the smoothest ride I’ve ever had. I instantly felt good on the board, it held an edge super well with no chatters or skipping at high speed and just felt so smooth in and out of the turns—I was a carving machine! And the best part is the board has mad pop too! I could pop ollies off even the smallest knolls. Kyre Byram, Roxy’s board designer explained to me that it’s the bamboo topsheet that gives it the extra pop, and does it ever!
Although the weather didn’t really cooperate with us, we all had a good time charging the fresh snow and shielding our faces from the cold elements! Just meant we got to spend a little more time mingling in the lodge sipping on hot cocoa and watching Roxy’s first snow video, Labor of Love. Of course wherever the girls went they drew attention and Erin, Amber, and Jessica ended up doing a TV interview for an Italian travel show. After a long day riding we were treated to an yummy sushi dinner at The Flying Sumo in Park City. The evening was spent stuffing our faces, swilling back Sake, and chatting with all our new friends. And then when I didn’t think the day could get any better Jessica gave me the Envy I had ridden that day! Thanks Jess!
