April Rider of the Month
Spencer O’Brien
Spencer O’Brien has been at the top of the game in women’s snowboarding for some time now. After standing on the podium at the Winter X Games and filming with the Runway crew, O’Brien reflects on scaring herself, having fun and playing Rock Band.
What has been the highlight of your month?
Riding in Colorado at Keystone. I went there for a week to get ready for the Open and the jumps were amazing.
What is the worst thing that happened this month?
My computer breaking, losing my phone for the second time in two months and getting my identity stolen...oh and TSA stealing my goggles. I haven’t been very lucky this month.
Who does your shred crew consist of these days?
It changes every week, because I’m in a different place every week. I’ve been shredding with the Notorious BEV a lot though, and the Runway girls.
What is something you’ve learned this month?
Don’t leave your phone on a shuttle bus when you’re Canadian and on a month and a half long trip in another country. Kind of eliminates the possibility of getting a new one.
What is your favorite aspect of snowboarding?
The way I feel when I scare myself or when I learn something new. It’s a really rewarding feeling to leave your comfort zone and have it work out.
Do you have some advice for the mini shreds out there?
As cliché as it is, it’s true. Just go have fun, that’s the most important thing.
Aside from snowboarding what have you been up to?
Hanging out in airports. I haven’t had much downtime this season, but when I do get it I just like to be at home, hanging out with my friends or playing Rock Band.
Which song is on repeat in your IPod right now?
Anyone Else But You by the Moldy Peaches.
What is your favorite vacation spot?
Hawaii, it’s the only place I’ve ever been to for a vacation and it was amazing! I want to go back.
If you could change something about the world what would it be?
I’d go back in time and make sure that George Bush never made it into office. That would change a lot of things for the better about our world today.
What do you want to accomplish next?
I want to win a contest pretty badly. Also, a big goal of mine is to one day film a video part that I’m proud of.
Who, in snowboarding, has influenced you the most?
My family and friends.
Why is snowboarding not just a hobby for you?
Because I just happen to be good enough at the thing I love, that I can do it for a living, which is pretty amazing.
Thanks?
My family, friends and boyfriend! Roberta and Sara at Infamous, Burton, Dragon, Lifetime, Etnies, Whistler/Blackcomb, Vestal, 133 Boardshop and Coastal Riders.
