October Rider of the Month
Molly Milligan
Interview by Sara Tollestrup
Over the past month, Molly Milligan has been busy making triple-layer ice cream cake, landscaping around Whistler and dreaming of art school in Amsterdam. She’s our Rider of the Month for October so Sara Tollestrup picked her brain, just for you.
What has been the highlight of your month?
I made a pretty sweet three-layer ice cream cake for my boyfriend’s birthday. One layer chocolate, one layer Baileys and espresso, and one layer Häagen-Dazs Caramel Cone Explosion. I let him have a bit.
What is the worst thing that happened this month?
I've had a nagging cold for like three weeks, and it finally left this weekend and I could breath again. And now I've caught some other freakin' cold!
Who does your shred crew consist of these days?
All the Gnarcore boys and other randoms.
What is something you’ve learned this month?
My body doesn't tolerate partying. And no, I'm not just being a grandma.
What is your favourite aspect of snowboarding?
Pow just feels good.
Do you have some advice for the mini shreds out there?
Don’t push an injury—let yourself heal.
Aside from snowboarding what have you been up to?
I’m serving at one of the restaurants here in Whistler, I just started another landscaping job on one property but it's just me on my schedule so it rules. Reading. Cooking. Moved in September. Trying to save money but it's kind of hard when I've only been making it for two months. Oh yeah, I went to Norway for a week this summer. So gorgeous, expensive though. Stopped through Amsterdam on the way back. Made me want to live in the city and go to art school, go figure.
Which song is on repeat in your iPod right now?
I don't listen to it too much at work. Mostly the sweet hum of the lawnmower.
What is your favourite vacation spot?
I haven't found one yet. New York City is pretty rad, although I've never gone there with enough shopping money. Next time. My real favourite is somewhere in Europe that I haven't been to yet.
If you could change something about the world what would it be?
Those high wasted jeans that are back in style. I'm sorry; they do not look good, except maybe on Gwen Stefani. But that's it.
If you could change something about snowboarding what would it be?
Retirement plans.
What do you want to accomplish next?
Just living a balanced life and not letting things get stale. I want to learn a lot this year in shredding and outside of shredding.
Who, in snowboarding, has influenced you the most?
My family. And no, they aren't "in" snowboarding. But they never said I couldn't do it.
Why is snowboarding not just a hobby for you?
It's way too fun to only do once or twice a year.
Thanks?
Rob Madill at Atomic, Mike Prangnell at Sessions, Dave Birnie at Timebomb, Dustin Goss at Pow and Desiree Moore at Drake. These guys help me a lot.
