S3 Supergirl Pro Junior Surf Contest

This years S3 Supergirl Jam is bigger and getter then ever with 3 events going down starting with todays Surf Supergirl Pro Junior in Oceanside, Ca.  A 20 and under competition the event drew out surfing’s elite up and coming surfers including California’’s COurtney Conlogue and Sage Erickson who just recently got back from helping Team US win their first Gold in 13 years at the ISA World Surfing Games in Costa Rica.

The finals took place right after the Oceanside Longboard Surfing Clubs tandem contest.  Tandem surfing is when two surfers a male and female typically catch a wave and the female is hoisted up by the guy into gymnastic type acrobatic moves while riding a wave. Unfortunately the swell size was minimal but they put on a good show!  With sunny skies and a packed crowd the 4 girls in the finals, Courtney Conlogue, Sage Erickson, Malia Manuel, and Nikita Robb made the 2 foot waves look good with vertical snaps and wide spraying cutbacks.  In the end it was Courtney who’s powerful surfing led to one of the highest wave scores of the heat at 7.75. winning $5000 the hugest Junior pro purse in female surfing.

Next up is the Supergirl Pro-Am Jam Skateboard Street Contest Woodward West August 19th followed up by the Supergirl Jam Snowboard Rail Jam and Skateboard Street Contests, Venice Beach, CA on September 6th.  Check back for more coverage of the rail jam and Click Here for more info on the whole series.

Summer X-Games

It’s crazy to think that skate, BMX, moto, and rally car drivers have been getting “Extreme” at the X-Games for so long as this years event marks the 15th Summer X-Games. As always the event drew a massive crowd and the athletes never disappoint whether it’s with massive falls and crashes or “NBD’S”(Never Been Done) it’s always entertaining and to be able to watch some of the events in person is the best.

I headed up to LA to check out Women’s Vert finals at the Home Depot Center. An invite only event with a field of 8 girls all going for Gold and the raised prize purse of $40,000 as X-Games has committed to all female prize purses matching their male counterparts.    The prize purse for women has been growing year after year thanks in large part to the crusades of pro vert rider and retired pro snowboarder, Carabeth Burnside. CB has been at the forefront of Women’s skating for the past two decades turning both male and females heads as well as being a strong advocate for all female skateboarders.  With so much on the line this year the girls were really pushing it, Carabeth was skating smooth and solid and just missed the top three taking home 4th, not bad for a women of 41 years of age!  It was all about the young girls as Lyn-z Adams Hawkins was trying to land backside 540’s, Brazilian Karen Jones had huge airs mixed with technical tricks, and 17 year old East Coast skater, Gabi Ponce, mixed it up with Judo airs and landed the first kickflip indy in the jam. Lyn z was the first female skater to ever land that trick in a contest and to see girls even trying that was sick, after Gabi stomped one, Karen Jonz locked one in in her run and then with minutes left in the jam Lyn Z stomped one taking home Gold! History in the making as all 3 girls landed sick kickflip indy’s.  Not to say the other girls were not skating strong, Julie Kindstrand and 13 year old Allysha Bergado showed that the future of Women’s Vert is alive with these young girls who charge the vert ramp with speed and style, busting lofty airs and handplants.

It was sweet to check out the event and I can’t wait for Lyn-Z’s celebratory BBQ this tuesday! Girl deserves to celebrate, actually all the girls do for giving us a final with “NBD’s”

Snowboarder Bryn Valaika came up to support her friend and Volcom team mate, Lyn-z

Brock aka"Lyn-z's lil' brother" and his friend Kieren were showing mad love and support!

Lynz frontside to victory!

Vert finals top three 1st Lyn-z Adams Hawkins, 2nd Karen Jonz, 3rd Gabby Ponce - Thanks to Peter Morning for snapping this with my iphone!

You'd be stoked to if you had gold around your neck and 40g's about to hit your bank!
